Career Research Essay: Preparing for Careers in Omnichannel Retailing and E-Commerce
1 Executive Summary
Omnichannel retailing has become one of the fastest-growing areas in modern retail because customers expect a seamless shopping experience across physical stores, websites, mobile applications, social media platforms, and customer service channels. As retailers continue to invest in digital commerce, employers increasingly seek professionals who possess both business knowledge and technical skills in e-commerce operations, digital merchandising, marketing analytics, and customer experience.
This report analyzes three real job postings related to omnichannel retailing: E-Commerce Marketing Specialist at Yellow Box Corporation, Digital Marketing Specialist at Ritz Tours Inc., and Digital Merchandising Coordinator at Gopuff. By comparing these positions, the report identifies common responsibilities, technical skills, and professional competencies expected by employers. The report also explains how the OACP course and the Master of Science in Digital Marketing (MSDM) program prepare students for these careers and concludes with a personal career reflection.
This report demonstrates how classroom learning can be connected to real employment opportunities in omnichannel retailing, e-commerce, and digital marketing.
2 Introduction
Retail has changed dramatically over the past decade. Customers no longer shop through only one channel; instead, they move continuously between websites, physical stores, mobile apps, social media, email marketing, and online marketplaces. This integrated shopping process is known as omnichannel retailing.1
Because of this transformation, retailers increasingly require employees who understand e-commerce platforms, digital merchandising, customer analytics, digital advertising, inventory management, and customer experience. Entry-level positions today often combine marketing, technology, and analytics rather than focusing on only one business function.
For this career research essay, I selected three job postings that closely relate to the topics covered in this course:
- E-Commerce Marketing Specialist – Yellow Box Corporation
- Digital Marketing Specialist – Ritz Tours Inc.
- Digital Merchandising Coordinator – Gopuff
These positions were selected because they represent different aspects of omnichannel retailing while sharing many common skills related to Shopify, Google Analytics, merchandising, digital marketing, and customer experience.

5 Connection to This Course and the MSDM Program
The OACP course provides practical learning experiences that closely match the responsibilities described in the three job postings. Throughout the semester, students develop a Shopify online store, organize product catalogs, customize storefronts, and analyze customer journeys. These projects simulate many of the daily responsibilities performed by e-commerce and digital merchandising professionals.
One of the most valuable learning activities is building a Shopify store. Shopify is one of the most widely used e-commerce platforms for small and medium-sized businesses. By creating product collections, organizing navigation menus, uploading products, and customizing themes, students gain practical experience that directly relates to the Yellow Box Corporation and Gopuff positions. Understanding how customers interact with an online store also helps students improve website usability and customer experience.
Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is another important component of the course. Modern retailers depend on website analytics to evaluate customer behavior, measure conversion rates, analyze traffic sources, and improve digital marketing performance. These analytical skills closely match the requirements listed in both the Ritz Tours and Gopuff job postings.
Students also learn Google Merchant Center and Google Shopping Ads. These tools help businesses display products across Google’s shopping network and improve online visibility. Employers increasingly expect graduates to understand digital advertising platforms and product feeds because paid search marketing has become an essential part of omnichannel retailing.
Another valuable experience is the CPP Farm Store consulting project. Working with a real retail business allows students to evaluate customer journeys, identify business problems, analyze retail operations, and recommend improvements. Compared with classroom exercises, this project develops stronger communication, teamwork, consulting, and analytical skills.
| Course Activity | Career Skill Developed |
|---|---|
| Shopify Store Development | E-Commerce Operations |
| Product Catalog Management | Digital Merchandising |
| Google Analytics 4 | Retail Analytics |
| Google Merchant Center | Product Data Management |
| Google Shopping Ads | Digital Marketing |
| Customer Journey Mapping | Customer Experience |
| CPP Farm Store Consulting | Retail Strategy & Consulting |
| Group Projects | Communication & Teamwork |
As shown in Table Table 2, the practical assignments completed in this course closely align with the knowledge and skills requested by employers.
Beyond OACP, the MSDM program further strengthens students’ preparation through courses in Digital Marketing, Marketing Analytics, Consumer Behavior, Marketing Research, Data Visualization, Business Communication, and Strategic Marketing. Together, these courses help students develop both technical competencies and professional communication skills required in modern retail organizations.
The combination of Shopify, Google Analytics, Google Merchant Center, customer journey analysis, and consulting projects provides students with practical experience that can be demonstrated in portfolios, resumes, and job interviews.
6 Personal Career Reflection
Among the three job postings, the E-Commerce Marketing Specialist at Yellow Box Corporation is the most attractive career path for me because it combines digital marketing, Shopify management, SEO, merchandising, and analytics. This role closely matches both my educational background and my long-term career goal of working in e-commerce and digital marketing.
Before entering the MSDM program, I worked as a Marketing Analyst where I gained experience using Google Analytics, Excel, SQL, Tableau, Power BI, and digital advertising reports. These experiences strengthened my analytical thinking and helped me understand how data supports marketing decisions.
Although I already possess strong analytical skills, I would like to further improve my knowledge of Shopify administration, Google Merchant Center, SEO, email marketing, and digital merchandising. The Shopify Store project completed in this course will become an important portfolio project that demonstrates my practical experience with e-commerce platforms. Likewise, the CPP Farm Store consulting project demonstrates my ability to analyze customer journeys and recommend business improvements based on data.
To further prepare for my future career, I plan to improve my LinkedIn profile, organize a professional online portfolio, and include screenshots of my Shopify store, analytics dashboards, and consulting reports. I also plan to continue earning Google certifications and applying for internships or entry-level positions related to e-commerce, digital marketing, and retail analytics.
One specific action that I will take this semester is to complete my Shopify portfolio and document each project professionally. Showing employers real examples of my work will make me a stronger candidate for future opportunities.
7 Conclusion
Omnichannel retailing continues to reshape the retail industry by integrating physical stores, e-commerce websites, mobile applications, digital marketing, and customer experience into one unified retail strategy. As organizations continue investing in digital transformation, employers increasingly seek graduates who possess technical knowledge, analytical thinking, communication skills, and practical experience using modern e-commerce technologies.
The three job postings analyzed in this essay demonstrate that Shopify, Google Analytics, SEO, digital merchandising, customer experience, and communication skills are consistently valued by employers. The OACP course and the MSDM program provide valuable opportunities to develop these competencies through practical projects and real-world consulting experiences.
Overall, I believe these learning experiences will prepare me well for a successful career in e-commerce, digital marketing, or omnichannel retailing.
